Quotable Quotes from the Young Extroverted One: Part V

“I’m going to be the allest of the universe!” –Young Extroverted One

Said this morning as we’re driving to school.  Basically, she was describing herself when she grows up.  It’s the natural succession of being a hockey playing, animal rescuing, paleontologising (that’s a cool word) artist. Everyday the list gets longer.  Whatever she ends up doing we’re behind her all the way!

Backward Glances

Every once in awhile I get a little nostalgic.  It happens mostly when I’m bored and online.  I’ve exhausted my blogroll, done all that I can with my facebook and myspace pages.  So, what else is there to do?  I tend to try some googling of former residences and schools.  For me that’s West Allis, Wisconsin and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.  I attempt to figure out where former classmates went to high school and search.  But no luck.

How does one look for peeps far removed? My family moved to Melbourne, Florida when I was eight.  That’s a big stretch of time with no contact to be looking for folks on the intertubes.  Heck, I don’t even remember the names of those I went to school with so how can I expect to try to find alumni and actually recognize names? I have already made connections with former schoolmates from my childhood in Melbourne through myspace. It’s just every now and then I like to look a little farther back. I’m currently at work so I’m not doing any drunk googling. That might get a little dangerous.

At least I found the house that I grew up (until eight) in. 1040 South 88th Street. That’s one thing I can remember!

Another One Bites the Dust?

So, Paul Kariya out? Ugh. The dumping of Vokoun was, hopefully, to clear the way to be able to hold on to Kariya. But who wants to stay on a sinking ship? By the way, I don’t think it’s a sinking ship. Where’s the loyalty?

Regardless of the outcome I still believe the Preds could be contenders. They have a good coach and a great goalie. If there is an inkling of skill in any of the players left I think it’s up to the coach to make a team the best. So, if Barry Trotz can’t ever make it happen it might be up to a new coach. Hopefully, the Preds will still be in Nashville if that happens.

Job Drama Continues

Well, I knew that I had to jump through some hoops in order to get the director of av job at the Marriott at Vanderbilt University but I didn’t know I had to do the limbo and play twister at the same time!

My boss said I had to do a quick phone interview with someone from corporate. Wha? I’ve been working for this company for about two years. Okay, I’ll do it. Did that on Monday. Then my boss told me that I had to do an interview with some of the head cheeses from the hotel. Alright, whatever it takes. He set it up for yesterday with the hopes of making the human resources call that afternoon. Well, what he thought was a group hug with the new director and his hotel partners turned out to be cuddle time with my boss and the hotel crew (of which I was not invited). Talking about me. Why not talk to me?

So, they all agreed that I would do this as a temporary or interim position for a couple of months as a tryout. That means I don’t get director pay until it’s official in the minds of the Marriott mob that I can indeed ‘sell’ audio/visual in this teeny (remember I used to work at the Gaylord Opryland) hotel.

At least I get along with the people that I will be working with directly. Those guys that talked about me? They only see me working. They don’t work with me. As long as I’m doing what the sales folks here need me to do (which I am doing) we’ll be golden. I suppose I’ll continue to be, as my facebook updates say, “playing ‘director’ of AV @ the Vanderbilt Marriott.”

Diggin’ on the Ba$tard

As I drove into work this morning I noticed some self(?) censorship on the Midtown Wine and Spirits. It was advertising a special on Fat Bastard and a Riesling. They spelled ‘bastard’ with a dollar sign for the ‘s’. Is bastard that bad of a word? I must be desensitized or something because I tend to use that word freely. Yikes, this might affect my blog’s ‘G’ rating.

I remember being introduced to the bastard around the same time I met the Elder Extroverted One’s family. Not only is it a pretty decent wine it has a great name. Especially if you have to say it out loud the dinner table. I really enjoyed saying, “Pass that bastard over here!” Sigh. Good times.

UPDATE: The word bastard did affect my rating. Shoot! After typing bastard seven (well, now nine times) my blog is PG. My own daughter can’t read this blog. Which is good because she can’t read yet.

Summer Fun

I’ve been meaning to write about this earlier but life and work get in the way sometimes. But, first, I must give a shout-out to God for the rain! We’ve been needing a new roof since we moved into this house and right when we hire someone to do it it rains like crazy the day they were going to come down. Now that the roof is done (and the impending bill is possibly on the way) I was afraid that is wasn’t ever going to rain again. If anything to at least prove to us that our choice in roofer was a good one. The work done was proof number one and now the lack of leaking is proof number two. We’ll be passing around a plate to collect donations for the roof fund after this post. =)

Okay, now onto the summer fun portion of the show. I have always enjoyed catching lightning bugs on summer evenings. I got to share this enjoyment with the Young Extroverted One the other day and we had a blast! There’s just something about spotting that green flash and running towards it to only lose the thing because it turned it’s light off and kept flying. Once the YEO got the knack she was catching them like a pro. As we took a breather from all the running to and fro I pointed out the bats flitting back and forth catching bugs (hopefully mostly mosquitoes). YEO thought that was the coolest thing ever!

I have this bat house (not my house but actually a bat house) that I’ve been needing to hang somewhere but like every project on deck it gets put aside. I still haven’t finished the laundry nook (what’s smaller than a nook? cranny?) with the sanding and the hole filling and the painting. At least we can actually do the laundry! I’ve also been meaning to put up a swing on the front porch for the YEO. Because, according to her, the porch swing is booooriiiiing. Whew, I got some work to do. ugh.

Now listen to some money collecting tunes as we start the plate around . . .

Vokoun Becomes a Florida Panther

According to TSN, Nashville Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun becomes a Florida Panther and the Predators get the Panthers picks in return.

Obviously,
the Predators need to cut salary to trim payroll for reasons already
written and hashed about, but in terms of goaltending ability, if we
used Save Percentage testing the mettle of quality goaltenders, new
number one Predators goalie Chris Mason was ranked 2nd in Save Percentage last year behind Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild.

The guy can play and he can stop the puck. What is good for the Predators, he comes at a cheaper price than Vokoun.

He’s got a good point. I thought Vokoun was good. Just not that good. Now we’ll see if Mason can shine in the number one slot!

‘The Great One’ Just Moved Down a Rung

globeandmail.com: Gretzky approves of potential Predators move

Gretzky approves of potential Predators move

TIM WHARNSBY AND ALLAN MAKI
From Thursday’s Globe and Mail
June 20, 2007 at 10:21 PM EDT

“First, it’s a great thing for [Balsillie],” Gretzky said. “Obviously,
he’s excited about it. If it actually works out that he gets to move
the team to Hamilton is something that we’ll have to follow over the
next little while.

“On the other side of it, I feel very disappointed for the people of
Nashville. But that’s business, that’s life. I will say this that if
the team is allowed to move to that area [Hamilton], it will be
tremendously successful.”

Damn you, Wayne! You do have a point. But Nashvillians and, hopefully, the businesses of Nashville aren’t going down without a fight.

I have said it before. While the potential for a move is there and I may not like it one bit that’s business. And EVERYBODY (for the most part) loves hockey in Canada. It would make better business sense (looking at Craig Leopold’s numbers) to move to a more receptive market.

Still, I love hockey and don’t want this team to move. If I had the cash I would buy several season tickets. Sigh . . .

*Props to my brother and his blog for this news.

Flyers swap picks for rights to Hartnell, Timonen                                        Phil Coffey | NHL.com Editorial Director

Philadelphia acquired forward Scott Hartnell and defenseman Kimmo Timonen from the Nashville Predators in exchange for the 2007 first-round pick, No. 23, the Predators had sent to the Flyers in exchange for Peter Forsberg.

Both Hartnell, 25, and Timonen, 32,are two of the most anticipated unrestricted free agents expected to hit the market on July 1, but if things fall into place for the Flyers, they will have staged an impressive preemptive strike.

I guess that’s all David Poile can do with an uncertain budget and ownership.  It makes me sad but if I had the money I would STILL buy season tickets.  So there!
